At Ikigai School, the Tabla Discovery Course is a hands-on introduction to the world of rhythm and Indian classical percussion. Designed for absolute beginners—children, adults, or curious learners of any age—this 8-session course lays down the foundation of tabla playing through a blend of tradition, technique, and performance. You don’t need prior experience; just a love for music and a willingness to explore.
We focus on both the rich cultural heritage of the tabla and its practical application—so you not only understand the instrument but also start playing from day one.

Play your first Theka in Teentaal and simple rhythmic compositions by the end of the course.
Learn the parts of the tabla, correct seating, hand placement and first open sounds.
Understand and practice fundamental hand strokes (Na, Tin, Ta, Ghe, Ke), and vocalise them through traditional recitation (Padhant).
Explore combined strokes (Dha, Dhin), and begin learning coordination through basic Thekas.
Discover the 16-beat Teentaal cycle, its structure, clapping patterns (Taali-Khali), and start playing its Theka.
Learn how to build compositions using Kayda format—introduction to Mukh, Paltas and a simple Tihai.
Broaden your rhythmic vocabulary with two new Talas often used in folk and light classical music.
Practice rhythmic variations in tempo (Layakari), and play a basic Rela to enhance speed and control.
